INKtober 2016, Day 19!

INKtober 2016, Day 19: Discord
9x12 brush pen on Stonehenge paper

I'd wanted to draw Discord for ages. His character design is so much fun! It's a shame I wimped out on adding his hind legs; like his arms, they're mismatched. I'll have to give him another try! :D

INKtober 2016, Day 6!

INKtober 2016, Day 6: "It's alright; I'm an emergency vehicle!"

Sketchbook studies made to better understand Cybertronian anatomy. :D

Col-Erase sketch; inking begun using a Pentel Color Brush.

I'm quite proud of that tire tread texture!

My kitchen counter setup at Mom and Dad's!

I'll say it again: ROBOTS ARE HARD TO DRAW when you're not used to drawing them! But I am a huge nerd (again) for Transformers: Prime right now, and this provided a good challenge for me. Ratchet is one of my favorite characters and Jeffrey Combs does a fantastic job bringing him to life. (It still cracks me up knowing that Combs played Milton Dammers in The Frighteners.)

This drawing is a nod to the episode "Stronger, Faster" (1x22), per Camille's suggestion. HOO-AH!!

I'll definitely try my hand at drawing more of the Prime characters - if not for Inktober, then whenever! I may want to consider buying some action figures for reference. :D

INKtober 2016, Day 2!

Inktober 2016, Day 2: Megatron vs. Dinobot
9x12 Sharpie marker on Crescent Rendr paper

Forget Michael Bay's movies; the Transformers cartoons are where it's at (and I've heard that some of the recent comics are good, too!). Being a 90s kid, I have a soft spot in my heart for Beast Wars. Robots who turn into animals? SIGN ME UP.

Dinobot was always one of my favorite characters. I drew a lot of dinosaurs as a kid, but I don't draw them often now. This was a great excuse to jump back on the dinosaur wagon. Throw Tyrannosaurus Megatron in the mix and we've got the ingredients for a badass dino-brawl.

Although my final drawing isn't as epic as I'd planned, I had fun using straight Sharpie to go with the flow. I saved tons of reference for the fight scene, so perhaps I'll revisit it!

If I were to make one crucial change to this drawing, I'd extend Dinobot's forearm feathers so they'd flare out with his raised arms. Dromaeosauridae and Tyrannosauridae had feathers, so I wanted to apply updated paleontology to old character designs. I still love the antiquated dry 'n scaly Beast Wars bastards nonetheless. :D

INKtober 2016, Day 1! (plus BONUS)

INKtober 2016, Day 1: Happy Hummingbird Hound
9x12 acrylic ink on Stonehenge paper

Camille and I had a bunch of friends over yesterday for an art jam. We need to host these more often, because they always prove inspiring! I'd begun my first Inktober drawing before anyone arrived, but finished it while visiting. I inked the outlines with my homemade quill pens (see the link below) and added Liquitex Dioxazine Purple ink with my new Princeton Art & Brush Co. Umbria #6 Round brush. (Say that five times fast!)

Rough sketch in Palomino Blackwing.
Crow feather on left; pelican on right.
I use a large dowel as a Mahl stick.
Outlines done!
SO MUCH PURPLE.

Inktober 2016, Day 1 BONUS: HOOT JUICE
5x7 acrylic ink and coffee on Cottonwood Arts paper

A silly bonus drawing featuring a severely caffeinated owl.

We discussed Transformers for a while. I grew up with Beast Wars, thus:

Dinobot sketches! He's one of my favorite characters in the show.

Last sketch of Inktober, Day 1: Beast Wars Megatron!

Stay tuned for today's sketches!

Fan Art: Jasper (Steven Universe) [SPOILERS] - Part 2

More progress on my Jasper drawing! Last night, I began outlining her with Prismacolor Verithin pencils. They're great for detail work, and I used them for many of my Oaxacan Animals.

Fan Art: Jasper (Steven Universe) [SPOILERS]

We All Get What We Deserve
11x17 Col-Erase pencil on computer paper

I'm a huge nerd for Steven Universe right now. What used to seem like an unassuming, simple little cartoon quickly proved itself to be one of the most engaging shows I've ever watched. While I usually shy away from fan art, I had to draw Jasper after her corruption in "Earthlings." Gotta love broken characters and body horror!

I wanted to practice my cleanup drawing skills. Although I haven't animated anything for five years, I still love the feeling of taking a rough sketch to clean line art. I wanted to make it look like an animation frame.

Screenshot I used as reference for the drawing.

Rough Prismacolor marker sketch.
Lightbox progress!
Finished rough drawing. I used photos of myself as reference
to correct some proportion and perspective issues.
Cleanup drawing progress!
Rough vs. cleanup.
Ready to be transferred to bristol paper!
Prismacolor / Copic marker sketch.

Stay tuned for updates on the final illustration!  I'm going to color the final piece with colored pencils.I can't wait to exercise those forearm muscles again. :D

INKtober 2014, Day 24!

Day 24: Curse of the Eye

6x8 pen and ink / brush and ink on Strathmore Mixed Media paper

Gargoyles is one of my favorite shows. I was hooked on it as a kid, and after rewatching it late last year, I realized how well it holds up. "Eye of the Beholder" is a Halloween-based episode featuring were-Fox. October 24th marked the 20th anniversary of the show's premiere!

This drawing was referenced from a screenshot; Fox is jumping out a window.

I should have used a larger sheet of paper...
