Inktober 2017, Day 6!

Inktober 2017, Day 6: "I can see the sugar in your eyes!"
6x9 acrylic ink and walnut ink on mixed media paper

Over a year later: here's Day 6 of my Inktober 2017 challenge! Seeing as I have most of my backlogged work organized for sharing, I figured I might as well just pick up where I left off.

The title was inspired by that day's Starbucks treats at work. I had a tuxedo Salted Caramel Mocha - just about the sugariest BS you can drink, but oh man, was it an experience!

INKtober 2016, Day 28!

INKtober 2016, Day 28: The Shepherd Waits
9x12 acrylic and walnut inks on Canson XL watercolor paper

I love drawing the Faelbe - the lesser gods of my fantasy world - but I don't draw them nearly enough. The last time I drew Ersphe was for day 17 of Inktober 2013, my first Inktober run. But I accomplished one of my goals this year, which was to draw each of the Faelbe (the Five).

Ersphe's full name is Zouelram Ersphe, or Soul Shepherd.

INKtober 2016, Day 10!

Inktober 2016, Day 10: Zhaji, Wraith of the Mortal Realm
9x12 acrylic ink on cold-pressed watercolor paper

2013 sketchbook page; rough sketch that was going to be for early Inktober 2013!
Tidied up sketch with violet Col-Erase.

I begin applying Liquitex ink! Phthalocyanine Blue (Green Shade).
One of my favorite inks!

Blocking complete!
Gemstone weights - clockwise from top-left - are citrine (purchased from OMSI), labradorite (purchased at 2015 Garibaldi Days), agate (from Oceanside), and calcite (OMSI).

I love the textures here.
Black acrylic applied with dip pen.

DONE!

Despite her being a fairly old character nowadays, I rarely draw Zhaji (SAH'chee). She is the youngest of the Faelbe - The Five - godlings from my fantasy story, Legacy (working title). Her siblings include Raccheruchhe, Uyne, and Ersphe. I have not yet shared Tetzylrach, the fourth sibling, on my blog. He'll become another Inktober subject soon!

Her full name, Zhaji-na-du'Layrrke, means "Wraith of the Mortal Realm." She is a mentor and guide for wandering souls. Her design was inspired by human, rabbit, horse, and moth features.

This is one of my favorite Inktober pieces so far! I need to create more work in this vein.

INKtober 2016, Day 1! (plus BONUS)

INKtober 2016, Day 1: Happy Hummingbird Hound
9x12 acrylic ink on Stonehenge paper

Camille and I had a bunch of friends over yesterday for an art jam. We need to host these more often, because they always prove inspiring! I'd begun my first Inktober drawing before anyone arrived, but finished it while visiting. I inked the outlines with my homemade quill pens (see the link below) and added Liquitex Dioxazine Purple ink with my new Princeton Art & Brush Co. Umbria #6 Round brush. (Say that five times fast!)

Rough sketch in Palomino Blackwing.
Crow feather on left; pelican on right.
I use a large dowel as a Mahl stick.
Outlines done!
SO MUCH PURPLE.

Inktober 2016, Day 1 BONUS: HOOT JUICE
5x7 acrylic ink and coffee on Cottonwood Arts paper

A silly bonus drawing featuring a severely caffeinated owl.

We discussed Transformers for a while. I grew up with Beast Wars, thus:

Dinobot sketches! He's one of my favorite characters in the show.

Last sketch of Inktober, Day 1: Beast Wars Megatron!

Stay tuned for today's sketches!

BRAINSICK: Mired by Complacency

Mired by Complacency
9x12 acrylic ink on cold-pressed watercolor paper

Final sketch compared to sketchbook drawing.

As one of my most developed characters, Finch is someone I turn to often when I need to express myself. This painting serves as a character study and an outlet for the negativity I'd felt during most of the year before leaving my retail job.

INKtober 2015, Day 31, Drawing 2!

INKtober 2015, Day 31 (2): Crimson Flare
5x7 Derwent Inktense and acrylic ink on watercolor paper

Derwent Inktense sketch compared to sketchbook page from last year.
Inktense lines with water added; acrylic ink for blood.

Drawn while listening to the following songs:

"After" - Moby
"Nothing's Impossible" - Depeche Mode
"Ode to the Bouncer" - Studio Killers (hahawhat)
"The Prisoner" - Tears For Fears
"Lost" - Haujobb
"The Dead of Night" - Depeche Mode
"Replicas" - Tubeway Army
"Lonely Soul" - UNKLE

Another experiment with Derwent Inktense and acrylic ink. The paper is made by Cottonwood Arts. I discovered the brand while browsing Muse Art & Design in inner SE Portland. I also picked up their D1 sketchbook; can't wait to begin working in it!

That's a wrap for INKtober 2015. But keep your eyes peeled; the ink won't stop here!

INktober 2015, Day 31, Drawing 1!

INktober 2015, Day 31 (1): Sire of Deception
5x7 acrylic ink on watercolor paper

Drawn while listening to "No Home Without Its Sire." and "Subway" by Peter Murphy, and "Self-Deception" by De/Vision.

I don't use 'sire' to misgender Anne. As my good friend Robert observed, "Anne has grasped male prerogatives because men are often admired for that behavior." She exudes aggressive power and confidence.

INKtober 2015, Day 30!

INKtober 2015, Day 30: With These Words I Can See
6x9 acrylic ink on watercolor paper

Sketchbook draft and first pass inks.
First pass completed with a dip pen (513EF nib). No pencil sketch.
First pass inks compared to sketch page drawn October 28, 2010.
Final version before I darkened Finch's eyes.

Title borrowed from Pink Floyd's "Wearing the Inside Out" - one of Finch's theme songs.

Finch has a coloboma in his left pupil; it's supposed to appear larger than the right. Although genetic, his probably worsened after an accident he survived as a teenager.
