Oaxacan Octopus, Stage 1!

^ Teardrop shapes outlined with Process Red Verithin; siphon colored. 

^ Teardrops filled with gradated colors.

^ Next pattern section outlined. 

^ Triangle pattern primed... 

^ ...and painted. 

^ As I did on the Big Cat, I use an impressed dot pattern. 

^ Impressed dot pattern finished!

  1. Jillian, i LOVE your colors. And your use of pattern, of course. And I notice you do these awesome indents in your drawings! Question- are you painting on top of colored pencils? Is that what you mean by "priming" (colored pencils) before you paint? Just curious! Really enjoying the step-by-steps!

  2. Thank you so much, Laura! The "priming" and "painting" are both done with colored pencils; I borrowed the terms to simplify my descriptions. A lot of colored pencil work is done in such a way that the paper texture and color show through. I refer to the finished pieces as "painted" simply because I try to cover as much white space as possible.
