January 2017 sketchbook / Creatuanary art!

Sculpey kitty-dog I ended up giving to Mom!

Day 1: Harpy (Grizelle, from Paradigm Chimera)

Day 2: Hippocampus (whale-based!)

Interlude: Oaxacan Honeybee for my friend, Elsa! It was actually a gift for her beekeeper friends; they give her honey throughout the year. She told me they loved it!

Final details added with colored pencil.

Visited Mom's work after hanging out with Elsa. Mom has a bunch of my early Sculpey figurines at her cubicle. :D

Finch and I contemplate the meaning of being 29.

Day 3: Stirge (mosquito-bat hybrid from Dungeons and Dragons)

Day 4: Chimera

Day 5: Lamia

Day 6: Hydra

Day 7: Tzika

Day 8: Gryphon (Silverclaw, from Legacy [working title])

Day 9: Mutated T-rex

Sir John Hurt passed away on January 25th. Three of his films had immeasurable impact on me as an artist and person: Watership Down, The Plague Dogs, and The Elephant Man. I drew Hazel, Snitter, and Joseph "John" Merrick, respectively, to represent each film.

Musky, my faithful Smilodon model.

Day 10: Manticore (based off of Musky)

Mass catch-up strikes again!

I jumped on the Creatuanary train a little late. I completed only 10 of 31 prompts, but it was still needed practice! The early months of any given year are when I'm at my most fickle. I like having different things to do, even when I try to complete a drawing challenge.

INKtober 2016, Day 24!

INKtober 2016, Day 24: It's Gonna Be Fine
4x6 Prismacolor markers on Strathmore 400 Series marker paper

I know there are a lot of self-affirmation types of art out there right now. Sometimes I desperately need to hear that Everything Will Be Okay; sometimes I can't shake off my self-doubt no matter how many happy things I see. But this little hummingbird is a reminder that I can't give up.

INKtober 2016, Day 22!

...so says the demon puppy.

BaBEE Sitter babysits bees!

Blep-O-Tron is fast and likes to blep.
Day 22 meant another drawing shindig with friends! I made these three silly drawings while visiting and eating too much bad (delicious) food. I like letting my goofiness reign supreme sometimes.

INKtober 2016, Day 16!

INKtober 2016, Day 16: GIMME ANOTHER ONE
6x8 Derwent Inktense on Strathmore 400 Series Mixed Media paper

Ballpoint pen sketch.

Dry Derwent Inktense looks like regular colored pencil.

I needed to draw another silly thing for Inktober. After a half hour or more of deliberation, I had the urge to draw an "angry drunk" hummingbird. And so it was done.

INKtober 2016, Day 5!

INKtober 2016, Day 5: Pudgikins!
6x8 Pentel Color Brush on Strathmore 400 Series Mixed Media paper

Introducing Pudgikins, the Hummingbird-Housecat Gryphon! She is a mischievous bundle of sweets-craving energy. Felt good to use my Pentel Color Brush again; the poor thing is neglected.

Sketchbook page from September 16th / 17th.

30 Day Art Challenge, Day 13!

Day 13: Draw a group picture.

8.5" x 5.5" ballpoint on sketchbook paper
"Group picture" is awfully vague, so I just drew a group of hummingbirds. I'm always up for drawing hummingbirds!

30 Day Art Challenge, Day 4!

Day 4: Draw an animal you think is really cute.

5" x 7" Prismacolor marker (with pencil outlines) on Stonehenge paper
Hummingbirds are by far my favorite animals. They're adorable and feisty, yet extremely territorial. I love watching them eat from the feeders I keep over the deck: at one moment serene, and at the next engaged in aerial combat.

This is one of the most candy-coated drawings I've ever made. The hummer's gorget (throat patch) has pale flecks in person; I drew them out from the base color with a Colorless Blender. Sadly, my scanner ate them all.

INKtober, Day 19!

Walter the Angry Hummingbird
9 x 12 brush and ink on smooth bristol
Walter popped into my head mid-way through college. He needs to be animated.

Sketchbook_Creatura 3 Pages 1 - 36!

^ Vitriol, a character I adopted from my good friend Ribbontail.

Developmental sketches of Uyné and one of its guardians, Arenket.

^ DeadBeagle is an OLD character of mine.
Recently, I've had thoughts of giving her a little story.

^ Younger Uyné.

Uyné's sibling, Ersphe, is a grumpy thing.
It very much dislikes mortals.

^ More of Uyné and Arenket. They are close friends.

^ Slightly more finalized concepts for the Oaxacan Coyote.

^ Sketches of Chagrin, a monster I'd created for
Character & Object Design in 2008. She is a feline-primate hybrid.

^ This is the most beautiful thing I have ever drawn.
Expect to see a fully-rendered illustration in the future.

^ Pose-pushed coyotes. These are pretty close to what
I want the final version to look like.

^ I seem to have drawn a Sparkle-Cat.

^ Pose borrowed from a magnificent sketch of Kerchak by Paul Felix.
Uyné is not known for its anger, but when it does get angry, WATCH. OUT.

Long time, no post! Not in three solid months, to be exact. A job can do that.

My last day at my temp job was yesterday, though my boss may ask for more help in the future on an as-needed basis. Of course, I cannot rely on this in light of the fact I need to move out this month (which I look forward to), so I am looking for another job.

I need to draw more study work.
