Herculean gryphon progress!

^ Yesterday's progress in adapting the gryphon into the Hercules style. Allyson gave me some pointers on the third drawing to bring more of the style in.

After the fourth drawing, Za intervened to help me better understand the style's conventions. By my fifth drawing - following her corrections - I had gotten fairly close; still needs some tweaks to nail the style.

Matching styles is a lot more difficult than it first appears to be, and it proved challenging and engaging. I took only a couple breaks during class.

To-be-Herculean gryphon!

^ A super-quick gryphon I whipped up last night for an assignment in Za's Cleanup Workshop. This guy is going to be altered in class on Friday to follow the style used in Disney's Hercules; he'll get a full model sheet and everything. Gonna be fun!

BRAINSICK: Imitation Cannot Save

^ Drawn on my birthday earlier this year. I wasn't feeling bad; Paranoid was. Revamp of an older concept.

Drawn with a dip pen (and none other than the 513EF nib!) and Speedball Super Pigmented Acrylic Ink.

December 22, 2010 hummingbird studies!

^ Quick Sketch-type work: a return to the job of the human photocopier.

The photos come from the first book on hummingbirds I ever got; a gift from my Grandma Ruthie.

Graduation wall display-in-progress!

^ In-progress wall display to be printed as part of the graduation process. I tried to pick some stronger pieces, as well as sketches that I liked well enough to show.

I'd be more than happy for any suggestions on what to keep and what to exclude, or of anything that should be replaced.

Cheshire Cat and White Rabbit updates!

^ Rough sketches of Anne and Finch, including the chorus to "Pale Shelter" by Tears For Fears.

Sketchbook_Brain Drain 5 Cover, featuring Lily and Decay!

^ Cover to my current Utility sketchbook. Sketched in Non-Photo Blue Col-Erase, inked with Rapidograph technical pens (sizes 2 and 3) and a dip pen (Hunt 513EF nib) with Speedball Super Pigmented Acrylic Ink. Colored with Prismacolor markers, Sharpie, and white out.

The illustration was sealed with Liquitex Gloss Medium & Varnish Fluid Medium; it is tough yet elastic, and waterproofs the cover.

BRAINSICK art: Assuage Me of My Fears (2004) and Leave My Fears Unrealized (2007)

^ "Assuage Me of My Fears" - 2004, Pigma Micron 005 and Prismacolor markers on smooth bristol. This piece represents the current (a la 2004) cast of Brainsick, alongside a smattering of themes.

^ "Leave My Fears Unrealized" - 2007, pencil on smooth bristol. This drawing - a revamp of "Assuage Me of My Fears" - was never finished and never will be, though I do like the composition fairly well. I'd like to revamp the concept as a promotional poster for Brainsick one of these days. It will be done!

I'd had a lot of trouble getting my human characters' faces to look right; it was not until I began college that I learned the value of thumbnail drawings.

BRAINSICK art: Angel (2006) and Angels Misled (2010)

^ "Angel" - 2006, Pigma Micron pens, Prismacolor markers, Sharpie, and white out on Borden & Riley marker paper. Drawn while playing the eponymous Massive Attack song on repeat.

^ "Angels Misled" - 2010, Speedball Super Pigmented Acrylic Ink on Borden & Riley marker paper.

Nibs used: Hunt 102, Hunt 107, Hunt 108, Hunt 513EF

A comparison of the same concept and how it was executed during different years. I love creating loose, free compositions for my Brainsick characters and their themes.

May 5 Pixelovely animal studies

I'm backlogged on scanning my open figure drawing sessions (currently two), but that should be taken care of by Thursday.

There is a reference to a song by The Smiths somewhere in these pages...

^ Another page of studies; this one comprises Oriental shorthair cats and an itty-bitty Siamese (from which the Oriental shorthair descended).

It's about time I updated! I was put off for a while because I'd named a TON of scanned drawings incorrectly - and I am very picky about personal naming conventions for my work.
